Madison City Chess League Scholarship
Women In Defense Tennessee Valley Chapter made a $1,000 donation from STEM funds to support the Madison City Chess League by sponsoring and creating two Girls Chess Scholarships. These scholarships pay for attendance to the weeklong Mid-South Summer Chess Camp in Memphis. While playing chess is not directly tied to our STEM outreach, it teaches strategic thinking, which is critical to higher education in STEM areas and career choices that serve the defense community. Mill Creek Elementary Tabletop Wind Tunnel
The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) engineering student design team completed and delivered a Tabletop Wind Tunnel to Mill Creek Elementary School on April 18. The presentation included a slide briefing on the unit detailing how it was built, how it operates, how children can interface with it, and what scientific data can be assessed from it. Video instruction guides were provided to teachers on how to set up the wind tunnel, use it, and take drag data from the models in the test section, and break it down for storage.
