WID-TVC and WEDC Highlight NASA Modern Figure, Dr. Shelia Nash-Stevenson

The Tennessee Valley Chapter of Women in Defense partnered with the Women’s Economic Development Council (WEDC) for a joint mentorship event, “From Hidden Figures to Modern Figures” on Tuesday, June 13 at Raytheon. Dr. Shelia Nash-Stevenson, Senior Program Integration Engineer for NASA Marshall Space Flight Center’s Planetary Missions Program Office, served as the keynote speaker.

Dr. Nash-Stevenson, a recent recipient for the NASA Modern Figure Award, has worked with NASA/MSFC since 1981. Today, she ensures the agency’s exploratory missions meet their goals and apply best practices from previous missions,

With the recent release of the film “Hidden Figures,” a story of three women whose contributions were critical to the success of the space race, we were honored to hear from one of Huntsville’s very own Modern Figures. Her message to WID and WEDC members could be summed up in one word: DREAM.

D – Define yourself. Don’t let others define you.

R – Reach. You’ll find yourself in places you never thought you would be.

– Excellence. Strive for it in everything you do. If you’re in a place where you can’t be excellent, move to a place where you can be.

A – Attitude determines altitude. Treat others the way you want to be treated.

M – Mentorship. Find a good mentor!

“Dream big, and never let anyone stop you,” Dr. Nash-Stevenson said.

Thank you, Dr. Nash-Stevenson, for such an encouraging message!
