WID/NDIA Defense Conversations and Connections

The Tennessee Valley Chapters of WID and NDIA invite you to the first event in a new series called Defense Conversations and Connections. Our first guests are Sheila Cummings, Cummings Aerospace President and CEO, and Kelly Franics, Cummings Aerospace Director of Strategic Development.

This podcast/interview style virtual event will offer insights and discussion around relevant topics within the defense community. Join us, ask questions, and get connected!

Ms. Cummings is the Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Cummings Aerospace, Inc., a Native American Woman-Owned Small Business (WOSB) and Small Disadvantaged Business (SDB). Since inception in 2009, Ms. Cummings has led all aspects of corporate operations and strategic development for Cummings Aerospace.

Headquartered in Huntsville, Alabama, with corporate offices in Niceville and St. Petersburg, Florida, Cummings Aerospace specializes in the flight science solutions and technologies for aerospace systems in support of DoD customers. Cummings Aerospace core competencies include; weapon systems engineering, physics-based modelling and simulation (M&S), aerodynamics, guidance, navigation & control (GNC) system development, software development, and hardware/software integration & test.

Ms. Cummings Aerospace Engineering expertise stems from her role as a government civilian Spacecraft Thermal Engineer with the Naval Research Laboratory, and later as a government contractor Systems Engineer on multiple Missile Defense programs. Prior to forming Cummings Aerospace Ms. Cummings led a $30M Missile Defense Business Unit as Vice President of a small engineering company in Arlington, VA.

Ms. Cummings plays an active leadership role in non-profit organizations, advisory boards, and participates in STEM focused community outreach initiatives. Ms. Cummings is the founder of the ACE Scholarship Program which provides education funding to economically disadvantaged minority students pursuing an Engineering, Math or Science degree.

Ms. Cummings received a B.S. degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1995.

Ms. Francis is the Director of Strategic Development for Cummings Aerospace, Inc., a Native American Woman-Owned Small Business (WOSB) and Small Disadvantaged Business (SDB). Cummings Aerospace core competencies include; weapon systems engineering, physics-based modelling and simulation (M&S), aerodynamics, guidance, navigation & control (GNC) system development, software development, and hardware/software integration & test.

Prior to joining Cummings Aerospace, Ms. Francis held various program and technical leadership roles with Raytheon Missile Systems in Tucson, Arizona for 21 years. Ms. Francis is a senior leader focused on customer service and value, program execution and company growth. As a Program Leader, she has successfully led program teams to exceed delivery requirements and company financial commitments. As a Strategic Development Manager, Ms. Francis successfully defined and implemented complex strategic partnerships for market and technology growth. She has experience managing capture, prototype, development, and production programs for the US Air Force, US Navy, International Navies, US Army, US Marine Corps, and Missile Defense Agency.

Ms. Francis received a B.S. degree in Applied Mathematics from Tarleton State University in 1999. She has attended the Defense Acquisition University Program Management School, certified in ACAT 1 Program Management. In addition, she attended the Kellogg School of Management training in Mergers & Acquisitions and Strategic Alliance Strategy, Valuation and Negotiation.
